Police constable Rakesh Sonawane of Dadar railway police was on escort duty in the second-class compartment of a Kalyan-CST bound slow local when Nilofar Sheikh, 23, boarded the compartment at Mumbra station at around 4.40am to get to JJ Hospital to deliver her baby.
"When the train left Vikhroli station at 5.07am, I noticed the pregnant woman was reeling from labour pains and screaming for help. There were six to seven woman passengers in the compartment, but none of them volunteered to help the woman. The woman told me that her husband Firoz Sheikh was travelling in adjoining compartment," said Sonawane and added that he immediately contacted the Railway Police Helpline for assistance.
When the train reached Ghatkopar, Sonawane jumped on the platform to request the motorman to stop the train and also asked the husband to alight from the train.
Sheikh was put on a stretcher and taken to a small room on platform no. 2 where she delivered a baby boy. An ambulance arrived to take the newborn baby and Sheikh to Rajawadi Hospital.
