Bill to replace Bombay with Mumbai in 74 Acts

Bill to replace Bombay with Mumbai in 74 Acts

The state government will table a bill in both houses of the state legislature to replace the word 'Bombay' from the title of 74 Acts. The word will now be replaced either with Mumbai or Maharashtra depending upon the jurisdiction of the Act.
The government made changes in the names of few Acts starting with the word Bombay and were restricted to the city in 1996. But the word was not replaced from the titles of 74 other Acts that were applicable in the state. The proposal was moved to make the appropriate changes in the Acts with the name starting from the word Bombay in 2006, but there was no movement after that.
The Bombay Police Act, Bombay Tenancy Act, Bombay Stamp Act, Bombay Public Trust Act are some of the key acts that will now bear the name with word Maharashtra once the bill is passed.
The bill, which will be called as The Change of the Short Titles of Bombay, is expected to be tabled in first two days of the winter session starting on December 12. "The Acts that were applicable only in the city and had word Bombay in their titles were re-christened by replacing the word in 1996. The Acts were mainly those relating to the planning authorities such as MMRDA, BMC. But the Acts with larger jurisdiction were bearing old names," said an official.
Shiv Sena MLC Diwakar Raote had raised objections to the use of the word Bombay during the monsoon session four months ago. He even demanded to hold back the bill tabled for the amendment in the Bombay Agricultural Pest and Disease Act 1946. He had attacked the government for its apathy in replacing the word Bombay in the titles of the acts. The government had then assured to bring the bill replacing the word in the winter session.
The official said total 12 bills are being tabled in the state legislature this session. "Eradication of blind faith, SEZ policy bills are pending for long. However, it seems impossible that these controversial bills will come for discussion," the official said.
