Prithviraj Chavan Maharashtra chief minister

Mr Clean

Prithviraj Chavan

Maharashtra chief minister

Nearly two years ago, Prithviraj Chavan took up the herculean task of cleaning up Maharashtra’s politics. In this short span, the chief minister has taken on the powerful builder lobby, ordered a white paper on irrigation projects, and refused to clear files that stank of corruption. His opponents have accused him of being slow, but the rest have supported him for fighting corruption. As his foes demanded his ouster, the middle class hoped he stays on. For now, of course, the CM is safe.
The state was in the forefront of the Indian economic story before corruption began to overshadow it. Chavan has just begun tackling the state’s problems and is bringing the powerful real estate lobby to book. An undoubtedly clean man, he needs time to complete his task
