Thackeray cremation at Shivaji Park

While the row over the location of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray’s memorial in Dadar continues, now the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has reportedly shot a letter to the commissioner of police in connection with cremation structure at Shivaji Park, where the leader was cremated on November 18.
“The permission for performing the final rites of the Sena chief on the ground was granted for a day. However, the structure erected for the cremation continues to be there for several days after November 18. Considering it could lead to law and order situation, we have sent a letter to the police asking them to look into the matter,” said a senior civic official, requesting not to be named.
Sources claimed, though the letter was sent to the police commissioner a few days ago, the issue was not taken up as the family and Sainiks are still grieving.
A senior police official from the central region confirmed receipt of the letter.
“The letter was sent to the commissioner of police who forwarded it to the authority concerned in the central region. However, no decision or action can be taken in haste as this is a sensitive matter and any step has to be taken keeping peace and security in mind,” the police official said.
Another senior civic official said a decision regarding the issue is expected to be taken on Friday.
But Sena leaders in the corporation refuted the report.
“There is no such letter issued by the civic administration. There is no truth in these reports,” said standing committee chairman and Sena corporator from Mankhurd Rahul Shewale.
Assistant municipal commissioner (G-North ward) SN Ughade refused to comment on the issue.
Civic officials are also worried about accommodating the huge crowd that will descend on Shivaji Park on December 6 to pay homage to Dalit leader Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar on his death anniversary.
