Customs detains women’s cricket World Cup replica

The Mumbai airport customs detained the International Cricket Council (ICC) women’s cricket world cup trophy on Monday evening at around 7.30 pm. The city will host the world cup event from January 31 to February 13, 2013. According to custom officers, the trophy arrived in a Jet Airways flight from Dubai in the baggage section and was detained. It will be released once ICC officials provide the central government’s approval documents for the trophy. “Goods like trophies should come via cargo or courier. They can’t come in the baggage section,” said a senior custom officer from the airport. The ICC, however, claimed that the trophy reached the airport with all the required documentation. “The trophy was brought from Dubai with proper paper work but was detained by customs,” said Colin Gibson, spokesperson of the ICC from Dubai. The trophy, which is a replica, was sent to Mumbai for promotional purposes, added Gibson. The world cup matches will be played at five venues across Mumbai which include the Wankhede Stadium, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Cricket Club of India (CCI), Middle Income Group Club Ground (MIG) and DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Customs officials had stopped two ICC employees carrying the men’s cricket world cup trophy at Mumbai airport on April 2, 2011. They had refused to let the trophy enter the city unless the ICC paid Rs22 lakh as customs duty.
