Special camps to help people enrol for Aadhar number

MUMBAI: With direct cash transfer (DCT) all set to be rolled out for several government schemes from January 1 in five regions across the state, the authorities have now planned special enrollment camps to people to procure Aadhaar cards, which are needed to redeem the money.
The regions in the first phase in the state include Mumbai, Wardha, Amravati, Pune and Nandurbar.
These camps are being held as the electronic cash transfers would be based on Aadhaar (Unique Identification Number) platform.

“We will undertake a special drive since this DCT involves 39 schemes like scholarships, health schemes, domestic gas subsidy as well as public distribution system,” said Ajay Bhushan Pandey, deputy director general, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), Mumbai regional office. “Along with the enrollment of Aadhaar cards, people can also open their bank accounts at these camps.”
Currently, the beneficiaries of various schemes have to many a times pay middlemen to get any amount from the government. To eliminate these middlemen as well as delays, the central government had unveiled a scheme linking bank accounts to Aadhaar cards. “This move avoids duplication,” said Pandey. Various ministries including ones for social justice and empowerment ministry, human resources, health and family welfare, and minority affairs have joined the scheme.
Presently, 10 banks — namely State Bank of India, Canara Bank, Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Union Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and Syndicate Bank — have geared up to offer this service to its customers. Aadhaar, a 12- digit unique number, launched on September 29, 2010, serves as a proof of identity and address anywhere in the country. Til date, 22.65 crore cards have been issued across the country of which Maharashtra has the second most number of registrations with 4.07 crore cards issued.

IN ADDITION to this, those who have enrolled but failed to get the cards can now download it online. This is prevent inconvenience to people due to delivery issues, he said.
