Ghanshyam Das Birla (G.D. Birla) in 1946   Indian Industrialist G. D. Birla backer & benefactor to Mohandas Gandhi, posing next to bust of his father, the founder of the Birla firm, at his palacial home in 1946 Shri Ghanshyam Das "G.D." Birla (April 10, 1894 – June 11, 1983) was an Indian businessman and member of the influential Birla Family. A close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, G.D Birla was the most important pre-Independence contributor to the Indian National Congress. He also advised Gandhiji on economic policies. Birla was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, whom he met for the first time in 1916, and Gandhi was at Birla's home in New Delhi when he was assassinated in 1948, having lived there for the last four months of his life.With an investment of Rs.50 lakhs in 1919, the Birla Brothers Limited was formed. A mill was set up in Gwalior in the same year.In 1926, he was elected to the Central Legislative Assembly of British India.In 1930s, G.D. Birla set up Sugar and Paper mills. In 1940s, he ventured into the territory of cars and established Hindustan Motors. After independence, Ghanshyam Das Birla invested in tea and textiles through a series of acquisitions of erstwhile European companies. He also expanded and diversified into cement, chemicals, rayon and steel tubes. Ghanshyam Das Birla during the Quit India movement of 1942, had conceived the idea of organizing a commercial bank with Indian capital and management, and the United Commercial Bank Limited was incorporated to give shape to that idea. Uco Bank, formerly United Commercial Bank, established in 1943 in Kolkata, is one of the oldest and major commercial bank of India. Envisioning infrastructural development in his hometown, Birla founded the Birla Engineering College in Pilani among other educational institutions. The college has evolved over the years to develop into one of India's best engineering schools, BITS Pilani. Today, Pilani also houses a wing of Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute (CEERI), a famous residential, public school christened after Birla's family and a number of polytechnic colleges. The town of Pilani and the local population enjoy a highly symbiotic relationship with these institutions, thereby stepping towards realizing G.D.'s dream. Moreover, G.D.Birla Memorial School, Ranikhet, a premier residential school has also been eshtablished in his honor by Syt. B.K. Birla and is today one of the best residential schools in the nation. In 1957, he was awarded India's second highest civilian honour, the Padma Vibhushan by the Government of India. good evening, dear all friend, संगीतकार म्हणून सूर-तालाशी खेळताना, गायक म्हणून शब्द-सूर आळवताना रसिकांशी सुरेल नातं जुळत जातं. बघता बघता ते अबोल नातं बोलकं होतं आणि मग गप्पांची मैफल जमवायची इच्छा अनिवार होते.. दर १५ दिवसांनी ही सुरेल मैफल अनुभवता येईल. 'हॅलो सर, मी बर्लिनहून बोलतोय! सर मी २८ वर्षांचा आहे आणि माझे आई-वडील ठाण्यात असतात. बाबा म्हणतायेत तू शिक अजून. ते कर्ज काढतायेत, पण मला वाटतंय आता बस्स! मी पीएच.डी. झालोय..' नावसुद्धा न सांगता हा मुलगा ऊर फोडून बोलत होता. माझ्या तोंडून फक्त.. हं.. हं..! 'मी परत ठाण्याला चाललोय, बाबांना सांगणार आहे, तुम्ही रिटायर व्हा! माझे बाबा खरंच दमलेत हो.. गेले काही दिवस मी खूप दिवस अस्वस्थ होतो, पण काय करावं सुचत नव्हतं. इंटरनेटवर 'दमलेला बाबा' गाणं ऐकलं आणि परतीचं तिकीट काढलं.' आता माझ्या तोंडून 'हं.. हं' सुद्धा जात नव्हतं, इतका सुन्न झालो मी. एक उच्चशिक्षित तरुण इतका हळवा होऊन छोटय़ा मुलासारखा रडत होता.. बाऽऽऽऽप रे! हे काय आहे? दाद ? चांगल्या गाण्याला प्रतिसाद़़? की रसिकता़़़, हळवेपणा, खरेपणा.. खूप विचार केला आणि उत्तर सापडलं ते एवढंच, की 'याला म्हणतात नातं. 'दूर देशी गेला बाबा, गेली कामावर आई.. नीज दाटली डोळ्यांत.. तरी घरी कुणी नाही..' हे आमचं गाणं ऐकून एक भगिनी रंगात येऊन रसग्रहण करीत होत्या- 'आजचे आई-बाबा स्वत:मध्येच इतके व्यस्त असतात की, मुलांसाठी वेळ आहे कोणाला? आजची मुलं फार एकटी झाली आहेत. त्यांची व्यथा.. वगैरे वगैरे.. त्या कौतुक करत होत्या. पण ते ऐकताना डोक्यात इतका कल्लोळ झाला की, वाटलं, आम्ही नाही हो इतके वाईट, नाही हो इतके स्वार्थी.. हतबल आहोत आम्ही! ..डोळ्यासमोरून एखादा चित्रपट जावा तसे मी पाहिलेले सगळे व्यग्र 'बाबा' सरकत होते.. खूप आधी ठरवूनसुद्धा आयत्या वेळेला बॉसनी महत्त्वाचं काम लावलं, म्हणून मुलाच्या गॅदरिंगला जाऊ न शकलेला 'बाबा..', त्याच गॅदरिंगमधलं मुलाचं गाणं फोनवरून ऐकून गाडीत एकटाच टाळ्या वाजविणारा 'बाबा', परदेशातून येताना मुलीने फर्माईश केलेली बार्बी डॉल घेऊन वाढदिवसाच्या दिवशी पोहोचण्याचा आटापिटा करताना विमान रद्द झाले, म्हणून रात्री उशिरा पोहोचल्यावर मुलीच्या उशाशी बाहुली ठेवून झोपलेल्या त्या मुलीकडे पाहत आपले अश्रू इतरांपासून लपवणारा 'बाबा..', नाटकाच्या दौऱ्यावर असताना दर चार तासांनी आपल्या बायकोला फोन करून सहा महिन्याच्या बाळाच्या कानाला फोन लावायला सांगून 'हॅलो हॅलो. मी बाऽबा' म्हणत आपला सहवास देऊ पाहणारा अस्वस्थ 'बाबा', घरापासून दूर सहा-सहा महिने बोटीवर, युद्धभूमीवर राहणारा आणि पत्रातून, फोनमधून 'माझी आठवण काढतात ना मुलं? मी आठवतो ना त्यांना? अशा प्रश्नांना बायकोच्या 'हो..' या उत्तरासाठी आसुसलेला 'बाबा'.. इथपासून ते मुलीचं लग्न ठरल्यापासून रोज 'बोलता बोलता ठसका लागला म्हणून डोळ्यात पाणी आलं, बाकी काही नाही..' असं म्हणणारा 'बाबा'! बाळाकडे पाहून वेडा होऊन नाचणारा 'बाबा', ऑफिसमध्ये अतिशय कडक असलेला, पण घरी शाळा-शाळा खेळताना मुलीच्या हातचा धपाटा आनंदाने खाणारा 'बाबा', रात्री उशिरा घरी आल्यावर मुलांच्या केसातून हात फिरवत एकटाच बोलणारा 'बाबा', मुलांबरोबर फटाके उडवताना पुन्हा एकदा लहान होणारा 'बाबा', कामानिमित्त घरापासून दूर राहूनही दर रविवारी काही तासांसाठी धडपडत घरी येऊन मुलांना डोळे भरून बघणारा बाबा, शिकायला परदेशात गेलेल्या मुलीशी वेब-कॅमवर गप्पा मारताना 'तू बारीक का वाटतेस गं? तिकडे खूप त्रास होतोय का?' म्हणत 'नाही तर सरळ परत ये भारतात' असं सुचवणारा बाबा.. या सगळ्या बाबांची 'हाक', त्यांची धडपड, करिअर, पैसा हे सारे सांभाळत मुलांबरोबर वेळ घालविण्यासाठी ते करीत असलेला आटापिटा- हे सगळं सांगावसं वाटलं! अशा प्रत्येक पुरुषाला ही बोच असते. जेव्हा मित्र एकत्र जमतात, तेव्हा एकमेकांना खूप मनापासून सांगतात की, 'थोडा आराम कर, मुलांबरोबर मजा कर' कळतं, पण साधायचं कधी? कसं? ते कळत नाही. या गर्दीत धावताना आपलं जगणं कुठे आपल्या हातात राह्यलंय? माझा मुलगा मला जसं म्हणाला की, खूप गमती आहेत माझ्याकडे, आता नको पैसे, तू घरी थांब.' ..कुठे थांबायचं हे मुलं सुचवतात, पण आपल्यालाच समजत नाही. धावत राहतो आपण. आणि मनात ही भीतीही बाळगतो की, उद्या मुलं मोठी झाल्यावर गरज असेल त्यांना आपली? अस्वस्थ मनानं हे सगळं संदीप खरेशी बोललो. त्याचं आणि माझं नातं म्हणजे - न सांगता तू मला उमगते सारे कळतात तुलाही मौनातील इशारे दोघांत कशाला मग शब्दांचे बंध कळ्यांचा चाले कळ्यांशी संवाद. असं आहे. त्यालाही हे सारे असंच, इतकंच तीव्रतेने वाटत होतं आणि त्याच्यातला हळव्या मनापासून कविता लिहिली. माझ्या अस्वस्थ अवस्थेतच चाल तयार झाली होती. दु:खापेक्षाही उद्विग्नता, फ्रस्ट्रेशन मांडणारी ही चाल आणि ते शब्द यांतून हे गाणं रसिकांच्या मनात खूप खोलवर रूजलं. प्रत्येक ठिकाणी वेगळे किस्से, वेगळ्या प्रतिक्रिया.. कार्यक्रमात छोटी-छोटी मुलं-मुली आपल्या बाबांना रडताना पाहून सुन्न झाली. कोणी 'माझ्या बाबाला का रडवलंस' म्हणून आमच्यावर चिडली. सासरी गेलेल्या मुलींनी 'बाबा गाणं ऐकलंत?' म्हणत फोन केले. सगळ्यांच्या प्रतिक्रिया तुटक्या, हळव्या आणि दुखऱ्या.. हे गाणं मुलांनी बाबांसाठी ऐकलं आणि बाबांनी मुलांसाठी, आणि बाबांच्या बाबांसाठीही. हे गाणं जितकं बाबाचं, तितकंच ते आजच्या नोकरी-व्यवसाय करणाऱ्या आईचंसुद्धा.. प्रत्येक ठिकाणी गाण्यावर वेगळे किस्से, वेगळी प्रतिक्रिया.. सगळ्या तितक्याच हळव्या, दुखऱ्या.. (इथे वाढू शकतं!!) आम्हीही घरापासून दूर-दूर पुन: पुन्हा हे गाणं गातो आणि जखम रोज भळभळते. रोज ठरवितो की, या महिन्यात थोडं नीट नियोजन करायचं. मुलांबरोबर करायच्या अनेक गोष्टी घोळतात, पण बघता बघता हा महिना सरकतो.. मग स्वत:लाच पुढच्या महिन्याचं वचन.. हे चुकतंय, ते समजतं, पटतं. जे ठरवतो, ते हातून घडत नाही, यासारखी दुसरी बोच नाही. थोडं थांबायला हवंय. वेग कमी करायला हवाय.. पण निदान हे जमेपर्यंत तरी स्वत:ला टोचून टोचून रोज गायलाच हवं.. 'असा गेलो आहे बाळा पुरा अडकून हल्ली तुला झोपेतच पाहतो दुरून असा कसा बाबा देव लेकराला देतो? लवकर जातो आणि उशिरानं येतो.. सांगायची आहे माझ्या सानुल्या फुला दमलेल्या बाबाची या कहाणी तुला..' आणि इतक्या मेहनतीने बनवलीये म्हणून atleast lets fwd 2 others..a req. डॉ. सलील कुलकर्णी
