Country will topple Australia by shipping 1.5 mn tonnes of beef this year, as per US estimates
| ||
India is set to emerge as the world's leading beef
exporter this year, the US Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Foreign
Agricultural Service has forecast. India will ship roughly 1.5 million
tonnes of beef in 2012, surpassing current top exporter Australia,
according to the USDA report. That is more than double the exports India
logged three years ago.
According to the report, global beef production in 2012 will be virtually unchanged from the last forecast of 57 million tonnes. Global exports, however, are expected to increase by 497,000 tonnes to a record 8.7 million tonnes. India is seen accounting for 250,000 tonnes of the incremental exports, with additional export-oriented slaughterhouses expected to come on line this year. Exports account for 44% of beef production in the country. The growth in exports thus underpins production increases. For all that, Indian beef is not really beef as say the Americans know it — not a patch on Angus. It is water buffalo — and males and unproductive females at that — which exporters sell at lower cost to the meat-hungry, but price-sensitive consumers in the Middle East, North Africa and Southeast Asia. Slaughter of cows and milk-producing buffaloes is banned under Indian laws. But the USDA still counts it all as beef, and economically, it competes in the same markets, the report said. To its credit, deboned frozen buffalo meat, also called carabeef, from India is lean and has positive blending characteristics important to processors. As per the most recent livestock census, conducted in 2007, buffaloes comprise a third of the bovine herd in India. |
‘Winning the title is good, holding on to it even better’ Moments after winning the world title, Viswanathan Anand spoke about tense tie-break and enormity of the effort

king for the fifth time

Viswanathan Anand said he was
terribly tense before the tie-breakers of the World Chess Championship
on Wednesday. But he did not show any of it against Boris Gelfand. In a
nerve-wracking rapid play, the Indian Grandmaster (GM) kept his cool to
prevail over Gelfand and retain the world title. He has now won the
title for the fifth time; he won his first in 2000 and then in 2007,
2008 and 2010.
In the four-game tie-breakers, Anand brought in all his calculative prowess and outwitted the Israeli GM 2.5-1.5. The Indian GM had the clock under control while Gelfand was always under the pressure of time. Anand drew the first game and won the second game with Gelfand committing a blunder under time pressure. In the third, Anand fought back from a weak position, thanks to the extra time he had on his clock and in the fourth game, he knew a draw would suffice. He achieved it without breaking a sweat. "I'm really relieved that I won. Many times, I thought it might just slip. I don’t think I started as a favourite in any game, because Boris had had a good grip on the games. I am relieved," Anand said after the match. The tie-break was necessitated after the 12 regulation games ended 6-6 with players winning one each. Anand in fact fell behind after losing the seventh game. He bounced back in the eighth game. Anand admitted it was the turning point of the match. |
Bharat bandh: Mixed response against petrol price hike across the country
The nationwide bandh called by the NDA
and Left parties to protest the petrol price hike on Thursday evoked a
mixed response amid incidents of stone pelting, arson and road blockades
in Karnataka, Maharashtra and West Bengal.
In the national capital, the bandh did not evoke much response though party supporters blocked traffic in some places.
Small shops were seen open in many areas in the morning while commuters complained that there were less autos on roads as a number of auto and taxi unions have joined the protest.
In the financial capital, Mumbai, bandh supporters pelted stones at buses in two suburban areas of the city. Elsewhere in Maharashtra, activists pelted stones at 13 buses in Pune, 10 in Nagpur and Thane districts and stopped some buses by blocking roads in Satara district
Local trains and buses were plying as usual in most parts of Mumbai.
The bandh disrupted normal life in parts of BJP-ruled Karnataka where bandh supporters set on fire three buses and stoned about a dozen others forcing authorities to withdraw bus services in the city. Public transport was hit and shops and business establishments remained shut in several parts of Karnataka.
There was no impact of the bandh in Kerala and a lukewarm response to the stir in Tamil Nadu.
In Bihar, NDA Convener and JD(U) national president Sharad Yadav and BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain were among 800 activists taken into custody while enforcing the bandh.
Yadav, who along with 700 odd supporters took out processions in Saharsa town to enforce the call, was taken into custody.
Hussain, the BJP national spokesperson, and others were detained in Bhagalpur town while trying to enforce the bandh.
Yadav demanded that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh resign immediately for the "failure" of his government to control the spiralling prices of petroleum products and essential commodities.
In West Bengal, bandh supporters blocked some roads in some areas and squatted on railway tracks. Bandh supporters blocked the Howrah Bridge, which connects the metropolis to the Howrah district. They also blocked roads at Chapadali more in Barasat, in Bankura district, Budge Budge and some other places, police said.
However, buses, cars, taxis, trams were running in the metropolis though in less number.
Normal life was affected in Punjab due to the strike. Commercial establishments in Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Batala, Kapurthala, Pathankot and Amritsar remained closed, though factories and other industrial units were operational.
The impact of bandh was also visible on the transport network with buses including private ones remaining off the road, causing inconvenience to people, as per reports pouring in from various districts including Patiala, Gurdaspur, Pathankot and Kapurthala.
However, in Chandigarh, shops and commercial establishments remained open and buses were plying as usual.
In Congress-led Haryana, the bandh call did not evoke much response with shops and commercial establishments remaining open at most of the places in the state.
Markets were closed in major cities of Rajasthan and private buses off the road due to the bandh.
The unprecedented hike in petrol prices has helped the Left and the Right to make common cause for the nationwide protest, described by BJP and its allies as Bharat Bandh and by Left as All India Protest Day.
This is the second time that the BJP, Left and other non-Congress parties will be coordinating their agitations since the last Lok Sabha elections to give the impression of a wider Opposition unity on issues concerning people.
A similar agitation against petrol price hike had happened on July 5, 2010.
Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party, which is supporting the UPA government from outside, has also given the bandh call as has BJD in Odisha.
Goa remained completely shut except for few buses of state-owned Kadamba Transport Corporation plying on roads along with emergency services, in response to NDA's bandh call against the petrol price hike, sources said.
Several tourists were seen stranded in the coastal belt as tourist taxis, private buses and even autorickshaws were off roads fearing attack by protestors.
Police claimed that the strike was largely peaceful till noon sparing few incidents of road blockages and pelting of stones reported in North Goa's Bicholim town.
Siolim bridge linking the North Goa to Bardez and Tiswadi talukas was also blocked.
The attendance in the government and private offices remained scarce since morning, sources said.
The vehicles were hardly seen on roads in the morning but by noon people were seen travelling by the private transport.
Fearing action from transport department against them, All Goa Bus Owners Association (AGBOA) had earlier decided not to support the strike, but they did not run their buses.
State-run Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited had few of its buses plying on some routes.
But the skeletal number of buses were not enough to cater to the passengers who were seen stranded on various bus stands across the state.
Several banks, which had initially decided not to join the strike, had rolled down their shutters as they ran short of staff to run day to day affair, sources said.
The shutdown was peaceful with security tight across the state, the police said.
Shops, business establishments, schools, colleges, banks and offices remained closed throughout the state including the state capital and at Cuttack, Berhampur, Puri, Balasore, Sambalpur, Rourkela and Paradip.
In the state capital, roads wore a deserted look as public transport virtually came to a grinding halt.
Protesters carrying placards and banners held demonstrations and blockades demanding immediate roll-back of the hike in petrol price.
Train services were hit with bandh supporters blocking tracks at Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur and Balasore, delaying several trains including the Bhubaneswar-New Delhi Express, police sources said.
A large number of passengers were stranded at railway stations and bus stands in the state.

Kolkata goes berserk as the city celebrates the new IPL champions with full fervour
| ||
A sweet little chaos; a delirious Kolkata crowd;
dancing and jiving Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla; and chief minister
Mamata Banerjee felicitating the new IPL champions Knight Riders with
sweat cakes and gold chains — such were the scenes in the City of Joy on
Tuesday.
KKR’s victory procession began from South Kolkata’s Hazra at 11.07 am and stopped at more than three more places before they reached the Writers’ Building. As Gautam Gambhir’s unit entered the Writers’ Buildings (at about 12.25 pm), the chief minister and her cabinet greeted the Knights, with the skipper giving Banerjee the IPL trophy. Shah Rukh and Juhi joined the brigade ten minutes later. Welcomed with shawls and sweets, they left for Eden Gardens where a greater felicitation awaited them. For once, the Eden crowd ignored the sweltering heat and joined Shah Rukh and Juhi in the revelry. As the huge gathering went bananas, Banerjee and West Bengal state governor MK Narayanan soaked in the mood of the moment. Later, Shah Rukh planted a kiss of respect on Banerjee’s forehead. An emotional Shah Rukh said, “I felt gratified at winning the heart of Kolkata.” |

A short India-Pakistan series likely in December-January

A small window is being created to squeeze in a few ODIs during the
Christmas-New Year period when the touring England side is slated to
take a break
|
The ice seems to be melting fast between India and Pakistan, at least
on the cricketing front. There could soon be bilateral cricket between
the countries. A small window is being created to squeeze in a few
limited-overs matches between this Christmas and New Year period.
Needless to emphasise, the matches will be played in India.
The officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), who conducted a series of meetings in Chennai recently, have found a vacant slot for an otherwise busy Indian team between December 23 and January 10. The teams may play three limited-overs matches, or a couple of ODIs and a Twenty20 match. The window for the series comes between the Twenty20 and ODI series between India and England. During this period, England, slated to tour India this winter, will have returned home for a short Christmas-New Year break. The Poms go back on December 21 and return on January 3. But they are not slated to play an international till January 11 when the first ODI is scheduled. In between, they have a couple of warm-up matches. This vacant slot has been zeroed in by the BCCI managers. The Pakistan team will be free during December. They have an away series against Zimbabwe in January but the dates for that series, it seems, can be adjusted. The BCCI and PCB officials, who held talks on the sidelines of the IPL final in Chennai over the weekend, are believed to have realised the need to restore bilateral ties between the neighbours. Should the short tour materialise, the counties will have played a bilateral match for the first time in close to five years. “There’s a distinct possibility that we could have a few matches in December-January,” said a top BCCI official in the know of things. Similar was the response of Subhan Ahmed, PCB CEO, who was also in Chennai. “The Indian team is very busy, but we’re trying to slot in a few matches late this year,” the PCB official told reporters on arrival in Pakistan. The development comes close on the heels of the BCCI’s decision to invite a Pakistan domestic team to participate in the Champions League Twenty20 tournament this October. The restoration of bilateral ties is, of course, subject to clearance by the government, especially India’s. The Pakistan government, in any case, has been demanding restoration of India-Pakistan ties. Pakistan last toured India in December 2007; and India were to reciprocate with a return tour in January 2009. But the cricketing ties took a hit after the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai. In between, there have been sporadic matches between the countries but all of them have been either ICC or ACC events. |
Fear grips Kashmiri Christians
Fear grips Kashmiri Christians
|
Shock and awe has gripped the minuscule Christian community in
strife-torn Kashmir following the series of incidents in the last few
months.
Fear-stricken Christians have written to the Prime Minister seeking his intervention to safeguard the community and their religious places in the valley. This followed after an attempt to set ablaze Holy Family Catholic Church in Srinagar on last Wednesday. “There is a fear in a sense that if one more attempt is made which can be dangerous. There is an anxiety (among Christians)”, said Father Mathew Thomas of Holy Family Catholic Church. It started in November when Jammu and Kashmir police arrested Reverend CM Khanna of All Saints Church on charges of spreading discord and creating enmity between two religions. Two months later some unknown men set ablaze the motorbike of the parish priest. In April, J&K Police arrested a Christian couple on charges of “promoting enmity” when they were allegedly distributing pamphlets about Christianity in the border township of Bandipora in north Kashmir. |
