The sound  produced by hiccups is due to a spontaneous contraction of the diaphragm  followed by the involuntary closure of the throat. Most hiccups settle  after a few minutes.
 However, there's plenty you can do to help yourself.
 Try  holding your breath, drinking a glass of water rapidly, putting  something cold down your back or asking someone to surprise you to get  instant relief.
