Sapna Pareira, a resident of Vile Parle, chose a mobile tower near Thane Central Jail to protest 'Sholay-style'. Around 12.30 pm, she climbed up the mobile tower and threatened to jump. "The government has crores of rupees to spent on Kasab but no money for poor people," she said. Some passersby informed the police and the fire brigade. After pleading with her for over half-an-hour, the officials managed to bring her down. Pareira told the police that her brother-in-law is an undertrial in Thane jail and she had to meet him. She has a 10-year-old daughter, who is blind and stays in a hostel at Panchgani. "I need $15,000 for my daughter's operation but I cannot afford it," she said. "I tried getting financial help from the government but could not get it." While waiting to meet her brother-in-law outside the jail, she saw the tower and got the idea of a 'Sholay-style' protest. "We have arrested her for attempting suicide," said the Thane Town police. |
