‘Register domestic help even if they’ve been hired temporarily’

MUMBAI: Police officials investigating the murder of Daksha Daftary were in for a shock when the enquired with the victim's family about the masseuse, who is now the prime suspect in the case. The family knew nothing about the woman, except that her name was Anita.
The domestic help who doubled as a masseuse was not registered with the local police, and the family did not know her full name, where she lived, and did not have her photograph, the police said. “Even Daksha's husband Satish had seen her only once, as she had joined 15 to 20 days ago,” said an official requesting anonymity. Additional commissioner of police (east region) Qaiser Khalid, said, “Housing societies are 'islands of isolation' and hence it is necessary for residents to ensure they get all their house help registered.”
He added that in the eastern region, 4,000 domestic help have been registered so far. However, there is a problem. “In most cases, if the domestic help registered with us quits his job, the family does not have the new help registered. We need greater co- operation from people. They need to register even those who are employed on a temporary basis.”
Another officer said that help should be registered immediately after hiring. “There have been several cases in which the person employed committed a crime within days of being hired,” he said.
