भारताच्या एक दिवसाच्या खासगी दौऱ्यावर येणाऱ्या पाकिस्तानच्या पंतप्रधानांसाठी परराष्ट्रमंत्री सलमान खुर्शीद यांनी भोजनाच्या कार्यक्रमाचे आयोजन केले आहे . मात्र , त्या वेळी कोणत्याही महत्त्वाच्या मुद्द्यावर चर्चा होणार नाही , असे स्पष्ट करण्यात आले आहे .

' पाकिस्तानचे पंतप्रधान राजा परवेझ अश्रफ त्यांच्या कुटुंबीयांसह शनिवारी अजमेर येथील दर्ग्याला भेट देणार आहेत . त्या दिवशी खुर्शीद यांनी रामबाग पॅलेस या स्थानिक हॉटेलमध्ये अश्रफ यांच्यासाठी भोजन समारंभ आयोजित केले आहे . भोजनानंतर अश्रफ अजमेरला रवाना होणार आहेत . अजमेर येथील प्रार्थना आणि संबंधित कार्यक्रमांनंतर अश्रफ सायंकाळी पुन्हा जयपूरला येतील आणि तिथून विशेष विमानाने इस्लामाबादला रवाना होतील . या संपूर्ण दौऱ्यात अश्रफ राजधानी दिल्लीत येणार नसून , त्यांच्यासोबत कोणत्याही मुद्द्यावर चर्चा होणार नाही ,' अशी माहिती परराष्ट्र मंत्रालयाच्या प्रवक्त्याने दिली . पाकिस्तानकडून भारतीय जवानांच्या शिरच्छेदानंतर ही भेट घडत आहे . त्या पार्श्वभूमीवर , ' भारताने राजधानीत चर्चेचा प्रस्ताव त्यांच्यासमोर ठेवला होता का ,' असे विचारण्यात आले . त्यावर , ' त्यांनी हा दौरा खासगी असल्याचे स्पष्ट केल्याने त्यांच्यासाठी आवश्यक असलेल्या गरजांची पूर्तता करण्यात आली आहे . पाकिस्तान हा महत्त्वाचा देश असून , सामान्य राजनैतिक प्रोटोकॉलनुसार आवश्यक त्या बाबी पुरविल्या जात आहेत ,' असे परराष्ट्र मंत्रालयाकडून स्पष्ट करण्यात आले .

London: Think of the frozen arctic and you would imagine sea lions, penguins or polar bears. But how about a camel? British and Canadian researchers have discovered the first evidence of an extinct giant camel in the high Arctic.
    The three-and-a-half-million-year-old fossil has been unearthed on Ellsmere Island making it the furthest North a camel has ever been found. This ancient beast was three metres tall at the hump and about a third higher than the present day living camel species.
    The researchers say it’s a very important discovery.
    “These bones represent the first evidence of camels living in the High Arctic region. It extends the previous range of camels in North America northward by about 1,200 km and suggests that the lineage that gave rise to modern camels may have been originally adapted to living in an Arctic forest environment.” Scientists from University of Manchester used collagen fingerprinting from bone fragments to access the animal.
    They extracted minute amounts of collagen, the dominant protein found in bone, from the fossils. Using chemical markers for the peptides that make up the collagen, a collagen profile for the fossil bones was developed. The team then compared the profile to 37 modern mammal species, as well as that of a fossil camel found in the Yukon. He found that the collagen profile for the High Arctic camel was almost an identical match to the modern day Dromedary as well as the Ice-Age Yukon giant camel. The collagen information, combined with the anatomical data, demonstrated that the bone fragments belonged to a giant camel as the bone is roughly 30% larger than the same bone in a living camel species.

Krishna was stunned. For, the letter was from none less than Steven Spielberg himself. His assistant Samantha had attached a scanned image of the handwritten letter, which congratulated him on his documentary. Spielberg said he was “impressed, to say the least” by the documentary. “I’ll be looking out at the horizon to see where else you will emerge… and impress,” the letter ended.
    Krishna’s 70-second documentary is a tribute to his childhood hero and splices together iconic images Spielberg created over the years. “Steven Spielberg has been my favourite filmmaker for the past decade. He’s had such an illustrious career with a variety of movies. I’ve tried to write about my appreciation before, but somehow that wasn’t enough. I think this tribute conveys my admiration perhaps better than any words,” says Krishna.
    Krishna took four months to produce the documentary, working on it whenever he was free from college work.“I sent this to renowned film critic Roger Ebert, who posted it on his blog with my note, and then on Twitter and Facebook. It finally reached Lois Burwell, a make-up artist who worked with Spielberg on films like ‘Lincoln’, and ‘Saving Private Ryan’, who then passed it on to Spielberg,” Krishna explains.

Amreli/Surat: Not too long ago, a creepy silence would prevail in Abhrampara village near Amreli during the daytime too. The main market shut by 5pm and most young men were in Surat, 500 km away, in search of jobs. The aged and the infirm were left to fend for themselves.
    It was no different in Bagoya, Adsang, Bagda and many other villages in this belt. Erratic power supply had left farmers without work and the diamond cutting and polishing industry had broken down, triggering large-scale migration. But nine years on, these villages are bustling with business, and life.
    Diamond units, most of which operate from the houses, see hectic activity, thanks to 24 X 7 power supply ensured by the Jyotigram Yojana. Youth have returned to their native villages and many like Jatin Nasid, once a diamond polisher in Surat, now employ people.
    “I used to earn around Rs 7,000 a month in Surat,” Nasid says. “But I returned two years ago and started my own unit here.” He has 25 polishers working for him these days.
    Saurashtra has become a hub for Surat to outsource the stones from, processed as they are in nearly 8,000 units in and around Amreli and Bhavnagar.
    The single-cut diamonds, priced at Rs 10,000-15,000 per carat, have a huge market in both India and the US. The turnover: Rs 10,000 crore.
    “There were around two lakh diamond workers in these two districts about eight years back, which has now gone up to nearly three lakh due to new job creations,” says Chandu Sheta, senior office-bearer of the Surat Diamond Association .
    “Many of them are those who quit their jobs in Surat.” No wonder then that Surat diamantaires are also opening more units in the Saurashtra region.
    Bhupat Patel, chairman of Jogani Diamond Exports, has set up three units in Liliya village of Amreli in just the past four years. Naresh Gabani, a diamond unit owner in Mahidharpura, explains why this is happening. “Earlier, we faced a lot of difficulties because of the power situation. Now, though, we are getting round-the-clock electricity. I have been able to employ over 50 diamond workers from my village.”
    Generators were a common sight in these parts even 6-7 years ago. “But they are seldom used now,” says Vitthal Mendapara, president, Bhavnagar Diamond Association. “In Bhavnagar district alone, the diamond industry provides employment to more than 1.5 lakh people, mostly from the rural areas. Even women are acquiring cutting and polishing skills and adding to their household income.”

Mumbai: Motorists in the city will soon be able to book slots in the BMC’s parking lots from their homes. The civic body is planning to implement a web-based parking system from May 1, which will spare motorists the hassle of finding parking space in the city while also preventing overcharging by contractors.
    The BMC will soon invite tenders for handheld devices and a software that will allow motorists to check the availability of parking space and make bookings online. The handheld scanner will be used by a parking attendant to maintain a record of the parked vehicles in the lot.
    Data on the occupancy of parking lots will be saved in a main server, and motorists will be issued computerized receipts.
    On Wednesday, a proposal to appoint a private contractor for manning the parking lots was cleared in the standing committee meeting. The contractor will be responsible for security, cash collection and managing the handheld device.
    The cost of manning parking lots along with security is Rs 75 lakh. At present, there are 92 public parking lots, and 47 locations called spot tender locations — these locations are decided by the individual ward with a spot quotation.
    The proposal was mooted after the civic administration received a number of complaints about cheating at parking lots, especially in the island city, through overcharging by contractors. The new system will also help the BMC ensure there is no evasion of revenue.
    Samajwadi party leader Rais Shaikh said: “Before creating a liability of Rs 75 lakh, the BMC should share with us how much revenue you were able to collect in the last three months?”
