SRK gets clean chit in surrogacy case
Mumbai: After sending two inquiry letters to actor Shah Rukh Khan
seeking to know if he had used a sex-determination
test to find the gender of his surrogate child, civic officials on Tuesday said that there is no case against him.
“We feel there is prima facie no case, but we are sending a report to the state government,’’ said additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar.
The actor sent a statement on Tuesday evening underlining that there was no sex-determination for his child. “The baby was born before speculation of ‘sex-determination’ and other ‘issues’ pertaining to it were being raised in the media by some organizations,’’ he said.
Khan stated that his newborn, named AbRam, was born prematurely and through a surrogate mother. “Gauri and our whole family have been dealing with his health issues for a long time now,’’ his statement said. The child was born at Masrani Hospital in Andheri (W) on May 27 and was taken to Nanavati Hospital, Juhu, and Breach Candy Hospital thereafter.
“It seems unfortunate that I have to explain/clarify so many aspects for our newborn baby,’’ said Khan, adding that, “Our son is a surrogate baby and the entire process is bound by strict confidentiality. We would appeal to all, to allow us to cherish this private moment as a family.’’
The civic body received the actor’s reply last week. “The reply from Khan’s secretary is elaborate and enumerates every detail of the surrogate child. The report assertively states that there has no violation of the Pre-Conception Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique (PCPNDT) Act,” Mhaiskar said.
