There has been an increase in number of laptop and cash thefts from parked cars in Navi Mumbai. According to city police, Vashi is the favourite hub of robbers as the node has a number of offices and banks in the node.
On an average, there are at least 3-4 such cases that happen every week, an official from Vashi police station said. Vashi has maximum malls, offices, shops and fewer parking spaces.
With the less space available for parking, people tend to park their vehicles wherever they find place. At times, the vehicles are parked in such a way that it hides the one parked ahead. In such cases, the vehicle parked behind acts as a shield for the thief and makes it easier for them to break the glass of the car parked ahead, the official confirmed.
Even when a person is sitting in the car, the thieves have mastered the art of making away with the valuables by fooling the owner saying there is money fallen below the car. When the man in the car gets out to check it, the miscreant escape with the bag kept inside.
With every single day, the parking woes in Vashi is increasing, especially in sector 17 and so are the thefts from vehicles.
"We are doing our part of patrolling and vigilance on a daily basis. Along with us, even people should take care of few things to avoid such situations. Firstly, they should never leave any bag or valuables in the car, especially in the rear seat.
In case one cannot carry the bag along, it's better to keep in the vehicle's boot. Secondly, one should not believe any stranger's words when he says that there is something fallen below the car. If at all one has to make sure of the truth, he should take the bag with him while stepping out or locking the doors of the car," senior PI R Sardesai said.
In the first case, Vikas Qureshi, an Andheri-based businessman was robbed of bag kept on the rear seat that had Rs 2 lakh cash and a pistol on Tuesday. He had parked the car in sector-17, while in the second case, a Bhandup resident was robbed of laptop kept in the car.
