Wholesome Hangover Helpers

Summer cocktails are divine. Summer hangovers…not so much. Take a pass on hair-of-the-dog and ease the pain with these healthy cures:

Make an antioxidant smoothie
Break out the blender and toss in fresh bananas, blueberries, kale, and lemon. Blend. Drink up and let those natural antioxidants, vitamins, enzymes, and potassium do their healing thing.

Do as the Japanese do…
And have a bowl of miso soup. Too much alcohol leaves you dehydrated and in need of a refill of sodium and other vital nutrients. Miso restores what's been depleted and has the added bonus of improving digestion—which, as you know, can be pretty impaired after a night on the town.

Sip some kombucha tea
Apparently there's a dash of alcohol in kombucha, which may contribute to easing a hangover. Like miso, kombucha is fermented and contains bacteria that helps settle a queasy stomach.

Double your dose of Omega 3s
Among numerous other good things, Omega 3s help reduce the inflammation that's caused by alcohol and leads to hangovers. Omega 3s are also great at combating the dreaded puffy redness around your eyes and face the morning after.

Drink a tall glass of coconut water
Coconut water is full of electrolytes—in fact, it contains the same five electrolytes found in our blood. Alcohol depletes the body's vital fluids, which means restoring those electrolytes is key.
