At 11.28 am on 11/11/11, Sagarika Pawar's wish came true.
As the 32-year-old nurse from Panvel hospital held her bundle of joy—a 3.8kg baby girl — on Friday, she couldn't thank the JJ Hospital doctors enough for obliging her by delivering her baby on the 'auspicious' date.
"Sagarika had a history of three miscarriages. She had few complications too. We had told her that she would have to undergo C-section. She got admitted on October 28 and requested for an 11/11/11 delivery," said Dr Rekha Daver, head of obstetrics and gynaecology department, JJ hospital.
The public maternity hospitals such as Wadia and Cama Albless too had such requests. Cama Albless hospital too handled a C-section delivery at 8.30 am. "The woman was scheduled for a normal delivery and her delivery date was November 16 but because of some complications, we had to go for C-section. The family is happy to have a baby on 11/11/11," said Dr Rajeshri Katke, medical superintendent, Cama Albless Hospital.
Doctors in public-run hospitals, however, are cautious while giving in to requests for specific dates. "We rarely entertain such requests. Normal delivery is given priority. However, if there are complications and the woman is scheduled for a c-section with delivery dates near to the requested date, we give in," said Dr Anagha Chattrapati, lecturer in gynaecology, Wadia maternity hospital.
Dr Kiran Coelho, consulting gynaecologist, Lilavati Hospital, handled four delivery cases on Friday. "We had an 11/11/11 baby delivered at 11 am. Since the woman's delivery date was closer, we went ahead with her request," said Dr Coelho.
