Schoolkids invited to participate in leadership initiative, My City My Parks

With a cover of only 19 lakh trees for its 1.3 crore inhabitants and ever-increasing construction activity, Mumbai is in urgent need of open spaces and parks.
To address this issue and look for effective solutions, thousands of children from over 100 schools across the city will be invited to participate in an action plan and leadership initiative called My City My Parks.
Organised jointly by media company PVR and television channel Disney, the programme is aimed at re-introducing young people to green spaces in their city.
"Haphazard urban development has seen the spaces reserved for parks and gardens being taken up by builders and converted into concrete apartment blocks and office spaces. Introducing children to environmental conservation through textbooks in the classrooms can be a bit difficult," said filmmaker Amole Gupte who will be holding filmmaking workshops with the children as part of the initiative.
The organisers have identified students who want to be part of the process of change and not just armchair activists.
Actor Abhay Deol and filmmaker Paresh Mokashi have also been roped in to guide the young participants. Nearly 6,000 children from 100 schools across the city will be involved in the project. "They will be made aware of the role that they can play in the preservation and protection of their city through expert guidance and not through mundane textbooks," said Deepa Menon, vice-president, corporate social responsibility and communications, PVR.
The sessions will include films, theatre, and plays to be held across several centres in the city between November 15 and 23. "The children will then take a leadership role and act. They will capture their learning via filmmaking, photography, mural making and street theatre," Menon added. The shortlisted participants will get an opportunity to work with Gupte and Mokashi as mentors for their projects.
The selected candidates will undergo further training workshops and the finalists will get a chance to showcase their projects at a programme in February 2012.
