Cop miraculously cheats death on tracks twice in a matter of minutes

A police officer waiting for a train at Dadar station on Monday evening cheated death twice in a span of a few minutes. Waiting at the crowded station during peak hour, Raghunath Kokate, dressed in casuals, was on his way to Byculla for some personal work. As the 55-year-old leaned over the jam-packed platform to peep if a train was approaching, he lost his balance after a push from the crowd and fell on the tracks, right on to the path of an incoming CST-bound local.

As the panicked motorman slammed the brakes, Kokate used his presence of mind and lay low between the tracks, keeping himself flat. By the time the local stopped, four coaches had passed over him. Miraculously, Kokate escaped unhurt except for bruises on his chest and shoulders. A relieved Kokate thanked god and crawled out onto the adjoining track.

As he staggered to his feet and looked up, he found himself on the path of the speeding Punjab Mail. The train’s driver had seen him and was sounding the horn frantically even as horrified onlookers shouted at Kokate to jump to safety. He tried to scramble onto the platform, but it was too high. Seconds before the train reached him, a commuter gave him a hand and pulled him up.

Kokate was still rattled when he spoke to DNA. “It was a close shave. They examined me even as I was shaking. My thoughts were with my family. I called up my wife and told her they were taking me to Sion hospital.” An assistant commissioner of police with subsidiary intelligence department, Kokate is “under observation” at the emergency ward.
