Adarsh members want Sonia Gandhi to initiate probe against ex-army chief

Adarsh society has petitioned UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi for a high-level inquiry against former army chief VK Singh for allegedly manipulating information and fabricating the Adarsh scam to settle scores with his predecessor, general Deepak Kapoor, who was a member of the society.
In a letter sent on August 17, the society has alleged that Singh misled defence minister AK Antony, and the personal war between Kapoor and Singh escalated into a full-blown controversy that took a toll on the DF government in Maharashtra, had a cascading effect on the credibility of the UPA as well as on the reputation of several distinguished army officials, who got painted as ‘rogues’. The society has enclosed documents, already presented to the judicial commission, to prove that the land belonged to the state.
The complaint by society members, who have been pushed into a corner by the ongoing CBI inquiry, points to deep fault lines within the Army. Society members belonging to the defence have alleged that Singh’s actions were part of a planned stratagem to ‘defame his rivals in the Army and the Union government in connivance with Opposition parties.
The letter states that Singh, who took over as the Army chief in 2010, went ahead with a CBI inquiry despite initial inquiries showing that the land belonged to the state.

Both the Defence Estate Department and the Army headquarters, southern Command in Pune, had confirmed to Singh in 2010, in response to his queries, that the land belonged to the state government.
A confidential inquiry instituted by the Army Chief following this came to the same conclusion.
Despite this a CBI inquiry was instituted by misleading the defence minister.
The letter has also been sent to Union home minister, Sushil Kumar Shinde, Union law minister Salman Khurshid, Union defence minister AK Antony, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan among others.
