STORY TIME TALE TIME!
A young boy and his pet dog
A fisherman named R Ramakrishnan lives in South India. On 26th December 2004, R Ramakrishnan had just returned home from fishing. His boat was full of catch and he was happy. But soon his feelings of happiness were to change. A little later, he heard strange, unusual noises coming from the sea. What he saw, terrified him. Giant tidal waves were approaching his house and others’ too. Yet, he had the presence of mind to yell out to his wife, Sangeeta, “Run away!”
Sangeeta, the young mother of three small children quickly picked up the two younger ones in her arms and yelled out to her seven-year-old son, Dinakaran, to follow her as she ran towards safety. But young Dinakaran was too scared with the commotion and panic all around him. He did not follow his mother immediately. The safest place he had known was his home, the family hut, forty metres away from the seashore. Dinakaran headed for the hut while his mother with his two younger siblings, ran up the hill to safety. On reaching the hill Sangeeta collapsed in grief, mourning the loss of her oldest boy Dinakaran.
Some agonizing minutes later, she heard a familiar bark and her tears of grief turned to cry of joy. For she saw her son reaches safety with their family dog named Selvakumar. Dinakaran narrated how the faithful little dog had rushed into the hut, grabbed him by the collar and did all it could to urge him up the hill.
“He is not a mere dog. He is my God,” said the emotional Sangeeta.
Of course, Selvakumar will enjoy a special place in the home and heart of this family throughout his life.
