In the year 1996, a unique venture was jointly initiated by the faculty of Radiodiagnosis at AIIMS, MAMC and PGI to organize continuing medical education programs based on a series of imaging courses. An integral part of this endeavor was publish books covering all organ systems. The aim was to provide state-of-the-art knowledge to postgraduates and practicing radiologists along with establishing a uniform pattern of teaching in Radiology across the country. The first series of seven imaging courses was successfully completed in the year 2000. The second series of these courses was then initiated in October 2002 and was completed in 2004. This was also very successful and the accompanying books achieved wide readership.

Phenomenal technological advances and innovations in the last few years have prompted and necessitated a third series of these courses and the reorganization of the accompanying books. The third series was, therefore, started in 2008 of which six courses have already been successfully completed. The present course and its accompanying book is devoted to Recent Advances and Applied Physics in Imaging and contains 29 chapters. This topic was not covered as a separate course and book volume in the second series. Compared to the First Edition on Advances in Imaging Technology, which was part of the first series; the contents of the Second Edition have been significantly reorganized and enhanced, with addition of several new topics. We have attempted to include the advancements in equipment, devices and applications in all major modalities ranging from plain radiography to MRI. The basics of devices in intervention have also been included.
Target Audience
Hope that this book will help to enhance the imaging course series, and prove useful to radiologists in training and practice; as well to technologists as a valuable reference.
