In
the year 1996, a unique venture was jointly initiated by the faculty of
Radiodiagnosis at AIIMS, MAMC and PGI to organize continuing medical
education programs based on a series of imaging courses. An integral
part of this endeavor was publish books covering all organ systems. The
aim was to provide state-of-the-art knowledge to postgraduates and
practicing radiologists along with establishing a uniform pattern of
teaching in Radiology across the country. The first series of seven
imaging courses was successfully completed in the year 2000. The second
series of these courses was then initiated in October 2002 and was
completed in 2004. This was also very successful and the accompanying
books achieved wide readership.
Phenomenal technological advances
and innovations in the last few years have prompted and necessitated a
third series of these courses and the reorganization of the accompanying
books. The third series was, therefore, started in 2008 of which six
courses have already been successfully completed. The present course and
its accompanying book is devoted to Recent Advances and Applied Physics
in Imaging and contains 29 chapters. This topic was not covered as a
separate course and book volume in the second series. Compared to the
First Edition on Advances in Imaging Technology, which was part of the
first series; the contents of the Second Edition have been significantly
reorganized and enhanced, with addition of several new topics. We have
attempted to include the advancements in equipment, devices and
applications in all major modalities ranging from plain radiography to
MRI. The basics of devices in intervention have also been included.
|
|
Target Audience
Hope
that this book will help to enhance the imaging course series, and
prove useful to radiologists in training and practice; as well to
technologists as a valuable reference.

Quick Overview
Histoid
leprosy is a well-known entity, the impact of which on the global
leprosy elimination program has been a topic of dialogue. Hence, it is
befitting to have a rich didactic contents for teaching, learning and
research. It is now sitting cozy over the continuous leprosy spectrum.
In fact, it forms its 8th component. The transformation of
multibacillary (MB) leprosy is widely acclaimed and recognized globally,
while conversion of indeterminate, a passing phase in natural history
of leprosy, has never been highlighted, though it is a plausible
proposition. Currently, it seems to possess multi-and pauci-bacillary
components. Indeed, the latter is intriguing and should be worked up in
the future. The black and white photographs are retained. In addition, a
color atlas has been incorporated to facilitate the comprehension of
the clinical connotation and its instant diagnosis. Slit-skin smear
examination, as an office procedure, may facilitate the diagnosis. Its
confirmation, however, is required through salient microscopic
pathology. The addition of the color atlas may amicably meet the
diagnostic requirements. The transformed format incorporating the
elaboration of step-by-step execution of various facts so dear to the
entity, warranting up-to-date literature alerts. The current document,
for all intents and purposes, should therefore serve as an enriched
resource material for education.

Key Features
The
impact of the histoid leprosy on the post-global leprosy elimination
era is perceptibly magnified. It is, therefore, relevant to form the
details of the entity This object has been achieved through step-by-step
details of the entity like clinical and bacteriological features of M.
leprae, cyto-histopathology and immunological profile. The diagnostic
criteria are highlighted to facilitate its ultimate management. Besides,
it carries a color atlas for instant diagnosis

Quick Overview
Ever
since the publication of the first edition, there has been an incessant
and irresistible temptation to update the same. In the meantime, the
entity had gathered considerable awareness and momentum to eradicate
donovanosis/granuloma inguinale altogether from across the globe,
because it is one of the most pre-eminent genitoulcerative diseases to
facilitate the transition of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Several
scintillating reports focusing attention on this particular issue has
found their way into the literature. In fact, an overwhelming
evidencebased literature is now available on the subject. It is,
therefore, pertinent to take stock of the prevalent situation dwelling
on various facets of the disease in the light of literature alert. The
current recount is an endeavor in this direction. Once again an updated
enlarged version of the book is made available along with color atlas
depicting its salient morphological undertones for its precise instant
diagnosis.

Quick Overview
The
drug world is expanding at a very fast pace. New drugs are continuously
being added and obsolete ones are withdrawn. Age old regimens which
once enjoyed mass acceptance and reputation are being replaced with
newer concepts. A busy practitioner or a new incumbent to the profession
should keep himself abreast of these developments and reorient himself
to the changing circumstances. Drug resistance is frequently being
encountered and is the main cause of treatment failure.
In this
small work, attempt has been made to enumerate the standard drugs to be
prescribed for a particulardisease. In case of intolerance or drugs
resistance, alternative regimens are also inserted. However, the choice
of drugs depends upon the treating physician.
Over prescription
is certainly to be avoided and drug abuse is to be kept at minimum.
Doctor shopping is a common feature of the present time. Readymade
prescription is available across the counter from mini modified doctors
and there is no need to present the patient before the doctor. Such a
trend is certainly hazardous. Correct dosage, duration of therapy,
contraindications, adverse reactions, drug interactions, side effects
and toxicity should be kept in mind while writing a prescription. The
economic status of the patient and

need of eighth edition of the Practical Standard Prescriber was felt
because of lots of changes in the field of drugs, diseases, and
diagnostic methods have taken place in the recent past. In this revised
edition, an intensive effort has been made to provide an up-to-date
information on new drugs, their contraindications, with alternative
suggestions in cases of drug resistance and intolerance. Other points to
be kept in mind like duration of therapy, adverse reactions, side
effects, and toxicity, which are important considerations while
prescribing, are easily accessible in this edition. The signs and
symptoms and laboratory findings for easy reference for diagnosis and
prescription are also incorporated. The thrust on cost-effective
medicines is primarily kept in mind and costlier drugs are given second
preference. Some new drugs for diseases, such as iron deficiency and
megaloblastic anemias, prostitis, eosinophilia, leprosy, certain bones
and joint as well as gynecologic and endocrinologic diseases, etc. have
been included. The book serves as a good reference guide for students,
residents, and practitioners.
