The Bollywood actor is the latest Indian to grace the cover

Actor Aamir Khan has made it to the September issue of the international magazine Time. Amongst the Indians to be featured on the cover of this prestigious magazine are cricketer Sachin Tendulkar early this year in May while among actors Parveen Babi was the first one to be on the cover back in 1977, followed by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in 2003. Shah Rukh Khan was featured on the cover of the same magazine for a special issue on Asia’s heroes in 2004.
The cover story of the magazine is about the Hindi film industry and applauds Aamir as an actor as well as the man taking measures for the betterment of society through his TV show Satyamev Jayate. Filmmaker Kunal Kohli, who has directed Aamir in Fanaa, told After Hrs, “Aamir is truly the biggest star if you take the history of Indian cinema. And, not just as an actor but also as the person who inspires you. I think he is a role-model at par with any of the global icons like Tom Hanks and Steve Jobs. Currently, there’s no other star who can match up to his stature.” Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, who has directed him in Hum Hai Rahi Pyaar Ke and Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, affirms that Aamir’s appearance on the cover is an endorsement of his measure as an achiever. Says Bhatt, “The first actor to feature on that cover was Parveen Babi, who I knew intimately. Her image was that of an Indian goddess and now it’s Aamir. It’s an endorsement for the power of the entertainment community he belongs to and that is Bollywood.” Trade analyst Amod Mehra adds that Aamir has had a record of maximum hits in recent times. “He made a phenomenal debut with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak but then went through a bad phase after that. However, since Lagaan, Aamir hasn’t looked back except for Mangal Pandey. He is the most-sought-after actor and with his TV show he has reached another level,” says Mehra.
