Boost for rail projects after state lifts stay on Bandra land
MUMBAI: In a big boost to railway projects in the city under the Mumbai
Urban Transport Project (MUTP) – II, the state government has vacated
the stay on the sale of a 45,000-sq m railway land in Bandra (East).
This marks the end of a major ownership dispute between the Western Railway (WR) and the state and paves way for the development of the land. The dispute, and the subsequent stay, had stalled several railway projects as they were going to be funded by the money generated through commercial work on the plot.
State revenue minister Balasaheb Thorat, in a five-page order, directed revenue authorities to earmark the land according to the map presented by the WR in 1911, within two weeks. The WR received the order on Thursday.

“This development has given a major boost to city railway
projects,” said Sharat Chandrayan, chief public relations officer, WR.
“This is a positive step towards restarting the commercial development of the land parcel. The state’s order, confirming the railway’s claim on the land, will be presented to the Bombay high court. Further, the court will be requested to confirm the clear title of the land and close the case filed by the WR, so that more investors come forward to develop the land,” said Rakesh Saxena, managing director, Maharashtra Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC), which will execute MUTP projects in the city.
The commercial development of the land, approximately worth Rs5000 crore, will be looked after by the Railway Land Development Authority, the apex authority for railway land deals.
Around 50% of the funds generated from the commercial exploitation of the land will be spent on MUTP II projects executed by MRVC, 33% will be spent on railway projects outside the city but within the state and 17% on projects outside state.
