Hubby held for MBA girl’s suicide in Santa Cruz

Four days after a second-year MBA student jumped to her death from her uncle’s sixth floor rented flat in a Santa Cruz housing society, the Vakola police arrested her husband Umashankar Kushwah and charged him with abetment to suicide.
He has been remanded in police custody for 10 days.
Sonal Bagade, 24, lived with her mother on D’Mello Compound in Santa Cruz (East). Sonal’s mother, who is a nurse at a private hospital in Sewri, is divorced.
Sonal had allegedly married Kushwah, who lives in Gamdevi, in a temple three months ago against her mother’s wishes.
According to the police, Kushwah was forcing Sonal to quit her studies and move with him to his hometown in Uttar Pradesh. “Sonal wanted to complete her MBA, but he was forcing her to leave the city because of which she was depressed,” said senior police inspector Rajendra Pardesi, Vakola police station.
Sonal met Kushwah, who works with a private firm in Andheri, on a social networking site and they soon became friends. They would talk on the phone every day and three months ago secretly got married in a temple. The police have recovered the wedding pictures from Kushwah’s mobile phone.
Initially, the police suspected that the girl had ended her life because of family opposition to her marriage. Sonal’s mother had even moved into her brother’s house in Samarth Society on Datta Mandir Road so that they could keep an eye on her daughter.
On Sunday morning, after Sonal’s mother left for work, the girl jumped off the balcony of the sixth floor flat.
She was rushed to VN Desai Hospital, where she succumbed to multiple injuries.
The police had found a suicide note in which Sonal has apologised to her mother and relatives for not being able to fulfil their wishes.
