Computer queries

Q1
Is there any app in the Android market that can allow me to view or do the following on an Android tablet:
1. Word, text, excel & powerpoint files;
2. The Merriam Webster dictionary;
3. Run Windows - based exe (executable) files;
4. Adjust the time correctly once and for all without having to do it repeatedly

1. For word, text, excel and powerpoint files you can use GoogleDocs that come with a Gmail account. However, if you are looking for an application that will let you edit as well as read these files, a great solution is the Docs2Go. The free version of this software allows you to read the app, but to edit you need the paid app that costs around R800.
2. For the Dictionary, the Merriam-Webster application is available for free, and has a voice interface so that you can speak the word you want to look up.
3. As for Windows-based exe files, these can’t run on Android, as they are compiled only for Windows. You have no choice there.
4. For time adjustments, Android platform has an option that does this automatically. It uses your location and updates it by pulling the time off the Internet.

Q2
About a year ago, I lost some very important pictures from my laptop by deleting them accidentally. Can I somehow get those back with any open source software? I have not formatted the hard disk or upgraded my Windows software

There are a number of tools that can be used for data recovery, both paid and unpaid, and there are professional companies that can help you with this. My suggestion is to try a software called Recuva (www.piriform.com/recuva ) for Windows. This is an opensource freeware that lets you look for files that you have on your system. Un-deleting a file is dependent on a number of variants, and you may not be able to recover all. But quite a few can be recovered.
