HuJI threat: 14,500 cops fan out to likely terror targets

HuJI threat: 14,500 cops fan out to likely terror targets

Elaborate security arrangements have been made in the wake of warnings that some HuJI militants had recently sneaked in through the porous India-Bangladesh border to disrupt the Dussehra festivities on Wednesday.

The police said on Tuesday security has been particularly beefed up in and around vital installations.

Sadanand Date, joint commissioner of police (law and order) said about 14,500 police personnel have been deployed to ensure that processions carrying goddess Durga’s idols are taken out peacefully.

As many as 2,000 home guards, two companies of rapid action force as well as seven of the state reserve police force (SRPF) will assist the police in maintaining law and order. The central home ministry has directed all state governments to deploy additional security forces in crowded and sensitive places, including markets, religious places, railway stations and bus terminals — likely targets of militants, the police added.

Date refused to comment on the intelligence inputs, but added, “We have taken all security measures to ensure peaceful celebrations.”

To ensure smooth flow of traffic while the processions are being taken out, the traffic police have put in place several restrictions in the city.
