Cheaper knee replacement comes as a relief for elders

Cheaper knee replacement comes as a relief for elders

Knee replacement surgeries are generally performed on senior citizens suffering from the knee trouble. Through these surgeries the damaged or diseased joint surfaces of the knee are replaced. Doctors in the city say that since most of the times, it is the elderly people who have to undergo this surgery, they are very apprehensive whether or not they would be able to walk normally once the surgery is performed. Besides that such kind of surgery is known to costs a lot as well and hence there are many patients who prefer to bear the pain rather than undergoing the surgery. Keeping all this in mind, Dr DY Patil Hospital in Nerul has decided to offer total knee and hip replacement to many of the needy and those suffering at an affordable rate till October 22.
These surgeries are a part of the health campaign which the hospital is conducting from September 17. A panel of five surgeons including Dr Ravindra Khedekar, Dr Ashith Rao, Dr Sanjay Dhar, Dr Prakash Samant and Dr Sunil Shetty, who have lot of experience in this field, would be performing the surgeries. "Since the past few years we had been receiving a lot of patients who would suffer from such kind of illness and most of the times they would not go ahead with the surgery because of their poor economic status. We immediately decided to raise this issue in front of the management and requested them to offer patients surgeries in this area at a much lower rate," says Shetty. He adds, "Although we are getting the replacements done at a lesser price we are keen on not compromising on the quality of the implant. The packages provide the patients with implants from the internationally reputed company, DePuy (Johnson and Johnson) at subsidised rates. DePuy as we all know are global leaders in providing healthcare solutions in orthopedics. Where at most hospitals a person might have to pay Rs 2-5 lakh to get their knee replaced, the hospital is doing it at around Rs 1.3 lakh only," adds Shetty.
"The department of orthopaedics has always noticed senior citizens who suffer from knee and hip joint disorders. Many a times they are advised to undergo replacements. However, due to their dependency on others about economical assistance, they prefer to bear the pain. Hence, realising this we decided to conduct a camp," says Dr Shyam More, deputy medical superintendent.
