Guardian minister of Nashik Chhagan Bhujbal felicitates Kalpana Sawant during the passing-out parade of the 103rd batch of police sub-inspector course at the Maharashtra Police Academy grounds on Thursday
For the first time in the 106-year history of the Maharashtra Police Academy, a woman cadet bagged the Sword of Honour award at the passing-out parade on Thursday.
The passing-out parade of the 103rd batch of the police sub-inspector (PSI) course was held on the sprawling academy grounds in Nashik.
It was a proud day for the academy as Kalpana Sawant from Dogane village near Sawantwadi, Sindhudurg, was adjudged Best Cadet of the 103rd course and awarded the Sword of Honour.
"I do not see my success on gender basis. There is nothing different in being a woman police officer. I intended to work sincerely," said Sawant, with a confident smile.
Of the 562 cadets who passed out of the PSI course, 162 were women.
Guardian minister of Nashik Chhagan Bhujbal, who is also public works department and tourism minister, presided over the function.
Sawant, who comes from a family of policemen, had joined the force as a constable serving in Pune in 2006.
During his speech, Bhujbal asked the police officers to be more alert as the crime rate is increasing.
He added that the academy imparts the best and modern training, such as handling cyber crime and explosives, but the officers need to develop an attitude of courage and guts to handle difficult situations.
Additional director general of police Ashok Verma, director of the Maharashtra Police Academy Sanjay Barve, his deputy Nikhil Gupta and other senior officials were also present at the event.
