WHO IS MAHARASHTRA LOKAYUKTA?

WHO IS MAHARASHTRA LOKAYUKTA?

Justice Purushottam Bapurao Gaikwad, retired
high court judge, is Maharashtra’s Lokayukta. He
took charge in July 2009. His office, the new
administrative building opposite Mantralaya, gets
about 8,000 cases every year. But half of these remain
pending because the Lokayukta does not have a
separate investigating agency. Gaikwad was an advocate from
1970-1989. He was the additional government pleader
at Osmanabad from 1983 to Feb 1989. He was also the
district judge at Wardha, Amravati, Beed, Solapur and
Thane. He became a high court judge in December 2002 and
retired in July 2006. After retirement, he became the
presiding officer of the University and College Tribunal in Aurangabad.

WHO IS UPA LOKAYUKTA?

Johny Joseph, former BMC chief and the state’s former
chief secretary, was appointed as the Upa Lokayukta in
December 2009. “Many people don’t know about
us. But the Lokayukta’s office has been functioning since 1971,”
Joseph said. We organise camps in all districts. Mumbai doesn’t
need one though since the HQ is here. We come under the general
administration dept.”
