Close shave for century-old Kalwa bridge

A barge that had come for rep airs at the Kalian ship repairing yard hit the century-old Kalwa bridge and got stuck there for four hours. The incident took place while the barge was on its way back to the port in Belapur in Navi Mumbai. The barge finally passed from under the bridge when the tide was low and went ahead sailing towards its destination in Navi Mumbai.

"This is not the first time that a ship or a vessel passing from the Thane Creek route has hit the Kalwa bridge and this keeps happening," said a fisherman, adding that "if the sailing on this route is not stopped soon, the historic bridge which is still in use could be lost." Thane Municipal Commissioner RA Raju said he would see to it that the shipping traffic on this route is restricted and vessels are not allowed to sail in this route.
