Two bypasses later, PM, 79, beats stress with disciplined lifestyle

Prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh who turned 79 earlier this week has his plate full — an over 16-hour day
at work, presiding over meetings on issues of national importance, battling the opposition with alarming regularity on scams involving his ministers and government apart from travelling abroad for conferences. That is a hectic schedule for a top national leader who has undergone two bypass surgeries.
So how does Singh deal with stress and stay fit? The prime minister's frugal eating habits, his discipline when it comes to exercise — walking on the treadmill regularly, doing stretching exercises daily, not missing cardio and physiotherapy sessions — keep him physically sound, Dr Ramakant Panda, who conducted the second bypass surgery on Singh, told DNA. "His sugar level is under control. He is not a foodie and we don't have to force him to follow certain food habits," said Dr Panda.
"Every day, Singh puts in more than 16 hours at work. With the government embroiled in several scams at present, it becomes difficult to maintain one's health. But the prime minister has dealt with it without any symptoms of weakness. His health is good," said the doctor.
Singh underwent his first bypass surgery 25 years ago and the second in 2009. Dr Panda is constantly in touch with the physician's team monitoring Singh's health. "I used to visit him every three months. Now my meeting has been scheduled every month," said Dr Panda, head of the Asian Heart Institute at BKC.
