Gorkhas get into community-building
A grand Gorkhali cultural show — 'Hamro-Parichaya' (Our introduction) was held at Vishnudas Bhave Auditorium in Vashi on Sunday. The sole aim of the Bharatiya Gorkha Ekta Sangh in organising this programme was to establish their community in the satellite city so that those hailing from Darjeeling, Kalimgpong, Kurseong, Siliguri, Dooars-Terai and the states of Sikkim, Assam, Uttaranchal are able to bond, and preserve Gorkha culture, art and language. The show was inaugurated by guardian minister Ganesh Naik.
Sangh members are keen on building a Gorkha Bhavan in the city, and it wants to build up a corpus by organising such programmes and then applying for a plot in the satellite city.
"The guardian minister has assured that us that he will support the sangh in establishing a Gorkha Bhavan at Navi Mumbai. Every member of the community was very happy with his message," said PK Sashanker, the secretary of the Sangh.
The organisation is also keen to promote the education, medical care and welfare of the Gorkha community in the city. It wants to establish contact with like-minded organisations and NGOs in the satellite city to meet its aims and objectives.
Sashanker said, "The Gorkha community in Navi Mumbai has around 2,000 people living in Sanpada, Nerul and Kharghar. Many of our community members turned up for the event and many also participated in the cultural show that we had organised. Hira Rasaily, a well-known singer from Darjeeling, who has sung songs in Nepali, Bengali, Hindi and Bhojpuri had also come for the event," said Sashanker.
Members of the sangh's women's wing were also present for the programme. This wing regularly keeps in touch with women members and helps them out when they are facing any problems. The chairman of the sangh, Ranjeet Gazmer, said that budding cultural artists from Darjeeling Kala Niketan Academy had also come for the event. "These artists were school and college students and performed traditional dances from the hills. After the programme, we took them for sightseeing to various places in the city," said Gazmer.
