Bizman bags biggest offering for Rs. 32L

Deepak Solanki buys 1kg gold bar, the most expensive item the mandal received in 77 years

A 45-year-old businessman has created a record of sorts by purchasing the biggest offering at the Lalbaugcha Raja—1kg gold bar.
Deepak Solanki, a businessman from Mumbai Central, is a steadfast devotee of the deity. He had been taking part in the auctions for the last 8 years. He bought the one-kg gold bar by paying Rs32 lakh against the actual market price of Rs28 lakh. At the last year's auction, he bought a 900gm gold jewellery for Rs40 lakh, which was more than double the market price at that time.
The Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshoutsav Mandal had auctioned off the gold and silver gifts received from devotees between Friday and Sunday. The 1kg gold bar was the most expensive gift the mandal has received in its 77-year-old existence. Before Solanki became the owner of the gold bar, there was a lot of curiosity about who will buy it.
As per the tradition, the mandal auctions the gold and silver gifts during the weekend after the immersion. Every year, devotees purchase the gold and silver at prices much above the market price. Around 400 people had taken part in the auction this time.
A senior office bearer of the mandal said that before they opened the donation boxes this year, they had anticipated the gold and silver offerings to go down because of the high prices of the metals. "But devotees have offered 500 gm more gold this year compared to the 6.5kg gold last year," he said.
Solanki said that his faith in the deity had brought him to the auctions for the last eight years. Raju Lanjwal, treasurer of the mandal, said last year there were lot of bidders for the 900-gm gold chain because of which the bid price had reached Rs40 lakh. "But this year, there were fewer bidders, so the devotee was able to buy the 1kg gold bar for Rs32 lakh.In the last three days, we sold gold and silver for Rs 2.46 crore. Last year, the figure was Rs2.12 crore." said Lanjwal.
After the three-day auction, the mandal is still left with 5 kg gold and 150 kg silver.
