The controversy surrounding Hiranandani Meadows has finally got over as the authorities have decided to name it ‘Dr Kashinath Ghanekar.’ The name was zeroed down following the demand of theatre and television artistes.

The auditorium will be inaugurated on December 19 by Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray, the TMC said. Television and theatre personalities like Viju Mane, Uday Sabnis, Mangesh Desai, Santosh Juvekar, Abhijit Chavan and many others said the auditorium should be named after Dr Kashinath Ghanekar, a legendary artiste from the field of Marathi theatre and cinema.

There was a major fight over naming of the auditorium and names of big shots like V D Savarkar, Ghanekar and Pt Ram Marathe were proposed. Naming the auditorium after Ghanekar will be as good as paying tribute to his work and making younger generation aware of his contribution in the field of art.

Ghanekar was a popular Marathi film actor in 1960s and 1970s. His contribution in the field of theatre was very significant and his work on stage drama helped many actors evolve themselves as artistes. Some of the films done by Ghanekar are Dharm Patni in 1953, Pathlaag in 1960, Madhuchandra in 1967, Ekati and Preet Shikva Mala in 1968, Deo Manus in 1970, Ajab Tuze Sarkar and Zep in 1971 and Ha Khel Savalyancha in 1976.

The upcoming auditorium has facilities matching international standards. It has a capacity of 1200 audiences and advanced lights, sounds and other technologies needed for theatre and cultural performances. There is one mini-theatre specially designed for children with a capacity of 250 audiences.
