Now, Deakin univ to assist MU design a scientific syllabus

Amid the various controversies and rumours of his resignation over the last two weeks, University of Mumbai vice-chancellor Dr Rajan Welukar in his first-ever press conference announced mega-proposals worth thousands of crores to make the campus world-class.

Speaking to a bunch of media persons, Welukar deliberated on all the proposals in pipelines and revealed that the University of Mumbai has invited faculty from the Deakin University in Australia to train its own faculty. The Deakin teachers will also help members of board of studies to design a scientific curriculum for all subjects, he added.

Apart from sending a proposal of Rs600 crore to UGC for its centre of engineering and science, the Mumbai university has sought Rs142 crore for innovative programmes. Other demands include development and research and other grants for libraries. All the proposals are yet to get a UGC nod. “We will try to get as much fund as we can,” said Welukar. The university also wants to open an integrated centre of humanities and subjects related to traditions and culture.

To other queries related to probes in hall-tickets bungle, exam centres, 2011 Law paper delay he answered vaguely like a seasoned politician, without giving any clear picture. He also said he was not aware of the 2011 LLB paper at GLC (which DNA reported in Monday’s edition).
