Why the crime branch wants handler’s custody

The Mumbai crime branch team, which is currently in New Delhi to seek the custody of Abu Jundal, a deported Lashkar-e-Tayyeba terrorist and one of the key accused in the 26/11 case, said there are three reasons why they need to get Jundal’s custody.
The prima facie evidence on Jundal’s involvement in cases is registered in Mumbai, the city police need to interrogate him to ascertain his involvement in those cases and they need to determine if he is involved in other cases, a senior crime branch official on Tuesday said.
The crime branch has already obtained a production warrant to get Jundal’s custody from the Delhi police. Niket Kaushik, additional commissioner of police, crime, said: “We are likely to get his custody after the completion of his custody with the Delhi police [till July 5].”
The police want to ascertain if he is the same person whose conversation was intercepted during the 26/11 siege. “We are checking the voice samples with the Delhi police,” Kaushik said. His involvement in 26/11 will be ascertained through these voice intercepts.
Kaushik said Jundal’s identification is important as several cases registered under his various aliases.
There are also some cases against Jundal in his native Beed district, and an interrogation by the Mumbai police would help those cases.
“Not only in the 26/11 case, but Jundal will be thoroughly interrogated in all cases in which he has figured as a suspect so that new information and disclosures can be obtained,” said another crime branch official, on condition of anonymity as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
