International Day of Older Persons

BMC moots helpline, free check-ups
International Day of Older Persons

On the occasion of International Day of Older Persons, the municipal corporation, on Monday, proposed a policy for the around 12 lakh senior citizens in the city promising monetary and other health benefits.
Under this policy, 400 sqft recreation centres will be set up in all 24 wards, which will include entertainment facilities and a library.
The BMC also proposed to set up a special helpline and a dedicated cell for speedy assistance to any problem faced by senior citizens. Corporators will be allowed to spend money from their funds for these plans.
“Corporators can suggest the changes, which might be incorporated in the final policy. We expect to implement the policy after six months and budgetary provision for the same will be made in the next financial year,” said mayor Sunil Prabhu.
The proposed policy has also recommended free health check-ups and medication for senior citizens in civic hospitals. While needy elderly patients will be provided with financial help, civic hospitals will have special ‘memory clinics’ to help those facing memory loss.
BJP corporator Vinod Shelar had moved a notice of motion in the general body demanding such a policy for senior citizens.
Civic officials said a special committee, comprising the municipal commissioner, additional municipal commissioners, civic officers concerned and representatives of senior citizens, will be formed to understand the problems faced by the elderly and suggest solutions. The panel will meet once in three months.
