Drugged IIT-B girl was sold lies

Drugged IIT-B girl was sold lies

The 57-year-old suspended non-faculty staffer of the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) had weaved a web of lives over the last six months to get the 27-year-old PhD student of the institute, whom he later drugged and allegedly molested, in his house.
The student said in her statement to the police that she had walked into the house of Sauri Vardharajan after taking him at his word that he lived there with his wife and son. His family, however, is in Tamil Nadu. She said she has known Vardharajan since the time she was doing her MSc from 2006-08. Vardharajan then worked in the store of the physics department.
He, however, tried to interact with her more after she and two friends became a regular at the badminton court on campus. He reportedly kept insisting over the last six months that she have a cup of coffee with him at his house.
“He noticed that she had been going to the court alone recently. One of her friends had twisted her wrist while the other had possibly contracted malaria. She did not go to the court from last Tuesday to Thursday after he kept insisting that she accompany him for coffee. She finally agreed to visit his place on August 11,” said assistant police inspector Asha Korke who is the investigating officer of the case.
After driving her to his place around 9am, Vardharajan first offered her breakfast and then got filter coffee for both of them. But the student soon complained of giddiness and severe headache. He then offered her a pill (suspected to be a sleeping pill). When she found that the pill did little to give her any sense of relief, she tried to send a text message to a friend in Hyderabad but found it difficult even to type the message. She, instead, called him up. The line soon snapped and her friend called up her peers on campus, who started a search for her.
