Influx of Pak Hindus puts forces on alert

The constant inflow of the Hindu families from Pakistan through the Atari border in Amritsar has put the security forces on a high alert.
More than 200 Hindu families have come from Pakistan in the last one month triggering doubts in the minds of officials here if there could be a design in it.
As it is, about 1,500 Hindu families which migrated from Pakistan almost a decade ago and settled down in Haryana and Punjab, have been demanding citizenship in the country.
The Pakistan-based Hindu families have been coming on pilgrim visas, which are normally for two to three weeks. But, officials admit, that many of them did not return to Pakistan at all, almost the way a large number of Muslim families have done in the past few years.
“This trend is fraught with many security problems,” said a senior officer. “At times we wonder whether Pakistan is pushing in spies or subversive elements in the garb of Hindu families,” he added.
“We are screening them and their credentials to ensure that subversives do not make way to the country on Hindu names,” he said.
The influx of Hindu families has shot up after a series of incidents in which the Hindu families were victimised especially in Balochistan and Sindh provinces, by the Muslim fundamentals.
