Hangal remains in critical condition

Hangal remains in critical condition

Veteran actor A K Hangal, who was admitted to the Asha Parekh hospital in Santa cruz after he fractured his thigh bone last week, remains critical. “He was on life support initially but the doctors decided to take him off the ventilator since his condition wasn’t improving,” the 98-year-old actor’s son Vijay told DNA on Saturday.
Hangal, who has been in and out of hospital since the last few years, suffers from several ailments including tuberculosis, high blood pressure and kidney dysfunction. Doctors attending to him felt that he needed to be operated on but considering his advanced age it was decided that he was not fit for surgery.
“My father is a spirited man but due to his fast deteriorating condition, I fear he has very little chance of getting back on his feet this time,” Vijay added.
The Hangals were in a dire strait before the film industry chipped in with funds after news of the veteran actor’s failing health broke out last year. Soon after, industry insiders took to social media to garner funds and support for the ailing actor.
Hangal had participated in the country’s freedom struggle before he joined the Hindi film industry. Recently, he was seen in a TV show called Madhubala.
