Sources in the crime branch have dismissed the likelihood of a showdown between Ajmal Kasab and Abu Jundal, which was being considered in case Jundal failed to cooperate during interrogations.
Jundal, who is currently lodged in a special cell in the Mumbai police headquarters, has so far reportedly cooperated with the police. As a result, they do not see the need of bringing him face to face with Kasab, the lone terrorist who was caught in the 26/11 attacks. Kasab is currently lodged in the high security anda cell in Arthur Road Jail.
In order to bring the two face to face, the crime branch would have had to first submit an application at Arthur Road Jail, following which necessary arrangements would have been made. However, a senior crime branch officer confirmed that they have not submitted such an application and there will probably be no need to do so.
The Mumbai crime branch, while taking Jundal into custody at the Esplanade court, had stated that they might bring the two terrorists face to face. Sources at Arthur Road Jail also confirmed that they had not received any application from the crime branch regarding the same.
With Jundal’s custody coming to an end on July 31, the possibility of the two meeting is wearing thin. “The whole purpose of bringing the two men together was to make sure that Jundal could not lie to us as Kasab had already mentioned his name during the interrogations. However, since Jundal has not posed any problem so far, we have not yet decided to take him to Arthur Road Jail,” said a senior crime branch officer.
Jundal will be produced in the Esplanade court on July 31, following which crime branch officials will request for an extended custody in connection with the 26/11 terror attacks. The anti-terrorism squad (ATS) has also been seeking Jundal’s custody in connection with the Aurangabad arms haul case and the Pune bakery blast.
Jundal was arrested from Saudi Arabia, following which he was brought to Delhi. His custody was handed over to the ATS on July 20 by the Delhi police, following which he was sent to the custody of the crime branch. Jundal has confessed that he was part of the 26/11 attacks, and like Kasab, had received rigorous training.
