Life has been cruel to five-year-old Priya. Five years after losing her
parents, she has become an orphan once again with the murder of her
foster parents in Bangalore.
Pavan Kumar Maheshwari and his wife Babitha, who moved to Bangalore four years ago and were running a restaurant there, had adopted Priya when her mother died soon after giving birth to her in a government hospital in Chharra, Uttar Pradesh. Priya’s father had passed away a month before she was born.
Pavan and Babitha’s bodies were found in their own restaurant on Cottonpet main road on Wednesday.
Surprised on seeing the restaurant closed, a regular customer had opened the shutter and found the couple lying in a pool of blood. Priya had suffered serious head injuries but was alive.
The police suspect the involvement of Karthik, the restaurant’s cook-cum-assistant. Officials said, the noise during the attack on the couple could have woken up Priya. The killer, thinking she may reveal his identity, attacked her as well and fled. “She is lucky to be alive. Had the customer not found her, she would have died in a few hours,” an official said.
Priya is undergoing treatment at NIMHANS. She is now going to be looked after by Pavan’s brother Devesh.
“Pavan adopted the baby the day she was born. The naming ceremony was done at our house in Chharra,” said Devesh, who is a journalist. A father of three, he added, “I will take her home. She will be my fourth child.”
