While her family was busy shopping for her wedding, 25-year-old Smriti Puri committed suicide after jumping off the terrace of her building in Malad (West) on Monday morning.
“We did not find any suicide note at her residence. We are yet to ascertain the cause for her action. But we know that she had given her consent for the marriage and there was no pressure on her in this regard,” said senior police inspector Raghunath Bagul of the Bangur Nagar police station.
An MBA graduate, Smriti had quit her job at a private firm two months ago as she was engaged to a businessman and they were to get married in January 2013.
Smriti lived in the sixth floor flat of C-wing at Rajendra Vihar society in Evershine Nagar area along with her parents and two younger sisters Disha, 22, and Ramika, 17.
Her father Ajay works in private firm in Gujarat and had come to Mumbai on a 15-day leave, while her mother, a housewife, is at present in the United States shopping for Smriti’s wedding. Disha works in a private firm, Ramika is in class 12.
“At 9am, Disha left for work, her father was doing puja while Ramika was sleeping. Smriti went to the terrace but found the door was locked. The she went to the terrace in the A-wing and jumped off from there,” said Bagul.
“Hearing her fall on the concrete, the watchmen rushed to the spot. They identified Smriti and informed her family. At 9.45am, the police was informed about the incident,” he added.
“She was rushed to a hospital, but was declared brought dead. After the preliminary investigation, it appears that she fell legs first resulting in multiple fractures on the legs and hands. There was no blood on the concrete,” said Bagul.
The police have recorded the statements of her father and sisters but are yet to ascertain why she took her life. “We have also recorded the statement of her fiancé Vishal Chawla, who rushed to her house after hearing about the incident,” said Bagul.
A few relatives had visited the Puris on Sunday and they were there discussing the wedding plans until 11.30pm. They, too, told the police that Smriti was “very happy discussing her wedding”.
