Woman constable risks life to chase, catch chain snatcher

In what was truly a brave act, a female government railway police (GRP) constable fearlessly chased a 17-year-old chain snatcher on the railway tracks at Bandra station during peak hours on Saturday morning. She succeeded in nabbing the thief who had stolen a gold chain belonging to a commuter.
Meenal Gurav, who nabbed the thief, is a constable at Bandra government railway police station. Talking about the incident, she said, “I was on patrol duty on platform 4 at around 10 am when I noticed a boy moving around suspiciously. A Virar-bound fast local arrived on the platform and there was a big rush of ladies waiting to board the train. Sitabai Patkar, 58, was one of the ladies boarding the train. Taking advantage of the crowd, the thief snatched her chain and fled.” Realising what had happened, Patkar hollered ‘chor chor’ into the crowd.
By then, the thief had jumped on to the railway tracks and was running towards Mahim. Ignoring a train that was going towards Churchgate on the same tracks, Gurav leapt on to the tracks and ran behind the thief. Within two minutes, she caught up with him. Some male commuters had also followed her and with their help, she brought the chain snatcher back the station.
The teenage chain snatcher hailed from Bihar and arrived in Mumbai six months ago. He used to reside on the footpath near Mumbai Central station. Vijay Dhopavkar, senior police inspector, Bandra GRP said, “We have recovered the stolen gold chain and registered a case of robbery against the boy. He has been sent to Dongri observation home.” Dhopavkar added that Prabhat Kumar, the Mumbai GRP commissioner had announced a cash reward of Rs2,000 for the constable, Meenal Gurav, for her prompt action in nabbing the thief.
A resident of Virar, Sitabai Patkar said, “I am extremely thankful to the GRP for their speedy action in helping recover my chain.”
