Mumbai to get 200MW more power, thanks to RInfra link

Mumbai may be able to get seamless supply of power to tide over the crunch during the summers with Reliance Infrastructure Limited (RInfra) commissioning its loop-in-loop-out (LILO) link, which will enable the flow of around 200 mega watts (MW) to the city.
The link, which is on the Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited’s (MahaTransco) Boisar-Borivli transmission line and brings power to Mumbai from outskirts of the city, will also help decongest the power transmission corridor.
An official from RInfra said: “This would ensure free flow of additional power from outskirts to the tune of 150MW to 200MW during the forthcoming summer.”
Trends indicate that Mumbai’s power demand has been growing at the rate of around 4% annually and the registered peak demand in 2011 was 3,192 MW in the month of June. The peak demand for this year is expected to be around 3,325 MW, up by around 133 MW than last year.
RInfra has put in place tie-ups for power with KSK Energy and Wardha Power Limited to take care of load growth in its licence area.
The LILO is expected to reduce dependence on the systems of other utilities during a crisis and ensure prompt back feeding source in case of generation system for Mumbai goes down, the RInfra official added.
