The good old earthen diyas even today look fantastic when kept at your doorstep. They not only look attractive, but also add to the Diwali décor.
Different kinds of earthen diyas in various shapes and sizes are available across city markets this Diwali. They are already buzzing with a row of diya sellers who have come from Satara.
They are selling both normal clay diyas as well as the shimmering diyas.
They paint the diyas and give it to you on the spot; diyas are available in the shape of a coconut, conch shell and tree.
Sitabai Kalidas Chauhan, a diya seller, says people look for different stuff every Diwali.
“We sell diyas in a pack of two. So while an earthen diya will cost you around Rs15, the shinning one would come for Rs20. Customers always end up buying at least one pair of earthen diya,” asserts Chauhan.
However, this year you will find more people choosing designer diyas over the normal earthen ones. Designer diyas are made of mud but painted and decorated beautifully with glass work. Some people love to have a row of diyas outside their home as it adds to the festive spirit. That’s when designer diyas adds to the Diwali flavour.
Diyas having a small idol of Lord Ganesha carved on it are also drawing customers’ attention. “Diyas are also used during Lakshmi Puja. Many people are opting for diyas with Lord Ganesh’s idol carved on it so that they keep them in their mandir. These diyas also have enough space to pour ghee or oil. One only has to put a cotton wick in the diya,” says Pandu Ramesh, another diya seller.
