Villagers nab local boy to save honour

To save their village’s honour, residents of Ramnathpur from Jharkhand, who mostly work as domestic helps in the city, traced one of the two suspects involved in stealing jewellery worth lakhs from a Nepeansea Road flat and handed him over to the police. The main suspect is still at large.

On October 10, businessman Kunal Nahar filed a police complaint stating that diamond studded ornaments, idols and a watch, together worth Rs19.40lakh were stolen from his Tanya Height’s flat.

“On October 2, Nahar’s domestic help Santosh Bhuvaneshwar Yadav brought home a boy, who he claimed was his relative. Yadav requested Nahar to allow the boy to live there for a few days until he gets a job and accommodation,” said an officer of the Malabar Hill police.

On October 10, Nahar realised that the valuables were missing and so were Yadav and the boy. He then reported the matter to the Malabar Hill police, but he did not know Yadav’s exact home address, except that he is from Jharkhand. The team sent there empty handed.

On November 13, Suresh Yadav, who resides in Kalimata Nagar slums in Walkeshwar, turned up at the police station with a 15-year-old boy (name withheld as he is a minor) and told the police that the boy was involved in the theft.

“When the police questioned the boy, he admitted to this and we recovered the stolen articles,” the officer said. “As people from his village come to Mumbai in search of jobs, he said the reputation of the village was of utmost importance.”

Hence, when news of the theft spread among the villagers in Kalimata Nagar slums, they started looking for the two suspects.
